As Principal, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the community of Mount Ommaney Special School.

Early Years Sector

This sector provides quality educational programs across the two parts of the campus.

Our ECDP provides services and support to children and their families from birth to 5 years who have been identified with support needs. From playgroup to kindergarten to pre-prep, the ECDP focus is on supporting both students and their families as they begin their educational journey. Play based and child centred, programs are highly individualised to meet the unique needs of each child during this period of time when their learning is most rapid. Support is also offered to other early childhood settings. Children and families are carefully supported through this transition period into full time schooling. Many ECDP students transition into mainstream schools in the local area while others transition into the school age program at Mount Ommaney Special School.

The early years program focuses on helping young learners access the Australian curriculum and develops learning skills through explicit teaching, the use of Intensive Interaction and sensory and play based activities. The development of academic, social, behavioural and communication skills are a high priority, as is making sure that school is a safe and enjoyable experience. The program also supports families in transitioning their child from the ECDP or local service providers to special school.

Middle Years Sector

Students in the middle and junior secondary years continue to build upon their learning in the early years through the use of explicit teaching, Intensive Interaction and sensory and play based activities. Systematically collected data assists to support student’s transition between sectors.  Our Whole school curriculum plan developed in a four year cycle ensures students have access to a wide breadth of the Australian Curriculum.  The development of academic, social, behavioural and communication skills continue to be a priority, as is making sure that school is a safe and enjoyable experience that encourages independence.

Senior Years Sector

Staff in the senior sector work very closely with families and the community to prepare students for their post school life. Their programs are developed collaboratively through the Planning Alternative Tomorrows for Hope (PATH) and Senior Education and Training (SET) planning processes. They focus on students’ needs, abilities, skills and interests and prepare students for post school options through a combination of community based instruction and school based programs appropriate to each student’s individual needs. The Senior School team not only continues to provide high quality educational programs, but also extends their support to families as they move through this challenging period of time.

We are a proud school that boasts a range of quality facilities including our library, accessible playgrounds, indoor heated pool and indoor gym areas. Parents at Mount Ommaney Special School consistently report very high levels of satisfaction with the school and the programs offered, which not only include those based on the Australian curriculum but also those generated by the child’s individual learning plans and specialist programs such as sensory programs, music, Physical Education (PE), drama and bike riding to name but a few.

Our school is a welcoming community where the input of all is valued. Teachers work collaboratively with parents as well as therapist, nurses, teacher aides and specialists to provide high quality educational program in a safe, supportive and caring environment.

I invite you to search the school's website and learn a little about our school community. If you are a parent or carer of a child with a disability, or an educator or volunteer interested in working with us, I encourage you contact the school.

Once again welcome.

Mike Curtis -  Principal
